He waits for my guard to drop For a blink ending half way through To place his hands on the wheel And pitch me into the deep green blue I musn't sleep Eyelids creep My head's full of buzzing bees The night is old Flying solo's cold So beat it, Sandman, please! He tunes the radio out All the notes seem to be the same Where was I, where am I now? Stick or twist in a high stakes game I mustn't sleep... I daren't dream Headlights scream My brain's feeling like Swiss cheese The road ain't straight Gotta concentrate So beat it, Sandman, please! Can't see the sides of the road Down this tunnel in the open air Drifting in a straight line He's round the next bend to take me there I mustn't sleep... I daren't dream...

Well I can’t help being a straight white man in a straight white country And I can’t stand the injustices done in my name But I’m just a bloke that plays in a band for the love not the money Do you really believe that I’m to blame? Now I’m not saying I’m innocent But I’m not in cahoots with the devil If not for lack of controversy, I could be on the teevee trying to pretend I’m a rebel Fifty quid a show won’t fund an army Especially not if you prop up the bar like we do So don’t look at me when the world goes to war for a reason unknown or a cause immature I’ll be looking on with a brew wondering just like you Well I can’t help being born in the land of the living And I can’t fathom the places I see on the news But I’m just a bloke with small-time dreams like a tour or seven And I’m just gonna sit and play the blues Now I'm not saying we're heaven-sent But I can't truthfully say we're terrible If not for lack of business sense, we could be on the radio with an album to peddle Fifty quid a show won’t fund an army Especially not if you prop up the bar like we do So don’t look at me when the world goes to war for a reason unknown or a cause immature I’ll be looking on with a brew wondering just like you I can’t help being based in a town miles from anywhere Well probably I could but that’s by the bye But I’m just a bloke with a stage to stoke and a good way to get there And that’s what you’re looking to me for, and that’s alright

47 Days 02:37
Change, change in the air, storm on the horizon Change, change in the air, new moon a-rising Many words were spoken Left a bitter taste Resolved to repair what was broken Forty seven days Forty seven days Change, change in the wind, difference in the weather Change, change in the wind, heads coming together Took the early train To the west coast for a day Resolved to join up once again Forty seven days Forty seven days Diesel through the open window, opinion in the air Sulzer swirl and singing rails our soundtrack for the day Screaming down the tunnel, conversation everywhere Got to get something together Come what may Forty seven days Change, change on the way, quiet revolution Change, change on the way, made a resolution Meet in the basement At the Belmont picture place Began to get something together Forty seven days Forty seven days Change

Consumers, by their nature, consume without cessation Brandishing their credit cards, no thought, no hesitation Shopping channels, superstores, corporate conurbation It's no wonder we get sucked in, by weapons of thought castration Nobody knows anything about anything now Individuals have become irrelevant somehow Got your mortgage, your car loan, taxes til you’re long gone A hundred bills that you can’t name, to keep you at the grindstone Advertisers, in your head, convince that you need one Of every single product, in debtocracy’s toxic prize fund Nobody knows anything about anything now Individuals have become irrelevant somehow If I wasn't part of the problem I'd be righteously pissed off; I hate to say it but I'm one of those poor unfortunate souls that I've been speaking of... Nobody knows anything about anything now Individuals have become irrelevant somehow If you heed the media you'll be one with the crowd Disengage brain, and just blindly follow round & round (& round & round)

Living in your town Has got its ups and downs You’re always on the phone Complaining that you’re on your own I can be your man As and when you need a helping hand But there’s one thing you must learn I’m after something in return So I’m just biding my time Awaiting payment in kind Laying under your car Warm fluids running down my arms This horizontal time Just wasn’t what I’d had in mind Took so long to prise Your calipers open wide You’ve had me work so hard Looking forward now to my reward Still I’m waiting in line Awaiting payment in kind Looked me in the eye And asked me if I’d like a ride Well I jumped at the chance I was thinking that you’d never ask Vexed look on my face When you drove me down the Chinese place I was hoping that my pay Would stretch to more than a takeaway Seems I’ve been wasting my time Awaiting payment in kind

I want to ask a question of you if I may When are you free to spend some time with me today? Soak up gin, or rum, or beer, and sun Mercury rising from the glass and up the tube Lift up a drink to see the glittering ice cubes Life's too short, to waste, indoors, on days like these Sun's such a tease Come on now, Come with me It's too hot, For work you see Out instead, Good times ahead, In the be-er garden! You, in the shade, Dew on the curve What a scene, Allow me to observe Beckon me, Over to your shrine You look so damn fine, It's beer garden time. Make your excuses, make 'em good and get down here Cancel all your meetings, get that schedule clear Meet, your friends, bare skin, get bronze And get a round in for your buddies, new and old It matters not the poison please just make it cold Raise, a glass, toast the toa- sted escapees Sun's such a tease The clouds have blocked the sun and darkened up the sky The party's over with a shiver and a sigh Down, the hatch, and off, we crawl Into a grey and dreary city, looks like rain Wond'rin when we'll bask in sunshine once again Make the most, of all, the op- portunities Ahh, the memories! Here comes the sun! Beer garden time!

Don't look; You don't want to see this, and you'll Get spooked; You'll never be the same No fluke; It's a slanderous scene they say the Left hook; Is what's to blame X, (X,) communicated [horns] X, (X,) communicated, wrong again, and on the receiving end X, (X,) communicated [horns] X, (X,) communicated, count to ten, then cue the silence Big mess; Can't pretend you weren't the only Witness; and can't deny your claim Confess; How could you have known they would be Undressed; and unashamed?

Boy. Boy from a small town Staring out to sea Boy. Boy from a small town Seeing what can be He doesn’t want love, he doesn’t want hate Just wants to get out before it’s too late Don’t turn back, don’t turn back Let’s see what he can be Boy. Boy from a small town Looking at the city lights Boy. Boy from a small town Dazzled by the sights He doesn’t want love, he doesn’t want hate Just wants to get out before it’s too late Don’t turn back, don’t turn back Let’s see what he can be Boy. Boy from a small town Gazing at the sky Boy. Boy from a small town Trying not to live a lie He doesn’t want love, he doesn’t want hate Just wants to get out before it’s too late Don’t turn back, don’t turn back Let’s see what he can be

Fading Away 03:08
Playing footsie with the loot Absent when it falls down the chute Digging holes in the dirt Cash that cheque 'cos I'm fading away Did you forget to charge me up 'cos I'm fading away Wallowing today In dull shades of grey So dip me in fluorescent paint 'cos I'm fading away Dissipating out of view Halt the slide and latch onto you Digging heels in the dirt Keep me in sight 'cos I'm fading away Copper in your pocket stay Worth less than it did yesterday Digging pyrite from dirt Hope good times return before we fade away

Invincible but incapable Your words are slurred and your eyes are spinning in your head Well you might feel you’re on top of the world But in the morning you’ll be wishing you were dead Well I know that it takes all kinds But you’re driving me out of my mind So won’t you please just leave me alone Your mouth’s like a small-house door blowing in the wind Won’t you please just leave me alone Well you can yell all you like, but I’m not gonna take it in Girl you think you’re something special Give me the eyes as you’re sipping on your gallon of gin Your dress is cut down to half past two It’s impossible to talk to you without falling in Well I know… So won’t you please… Your two best friends there are in my face blocking my view Won’t you please… You can wear what you choose, but I’m not going home with you Help yerselves Fella why don’t you tell me Why the band’s never gonna have a gold record on the wall Self-appointed expert Seems you’re a fully-qualified A-grade know-it-all Well I know… So won’t you please… We don’t care if nobody cares who we are Won’t you please… Well you can say what you want, but I’m not gonna play guitar

Took a walk into the town with the polling day looming large Tried to gauge opinion on the streets Sun was getting hazy and the atmosphere was growing thin Nobody seemed worried in the least I’m certain everything will turn out rosy I’m certain everything will work out fine If it turns out that my confidence was misplaced in any way Then I’ll see you there At the end of the line Seven billion questions needing an answer, but there’s nothing done We’re all too busy pushing each other around Argument ensues about the colour of the bedroom walls Meanwhile the house is burning down Paper came in through my door telling me I’d everything to gain Another paper telling me I’d all to lose Devil and the deep blue sea staring at me from the ballot card Oooh, whichever one will I choose?

about

It finally happened - the long-promised album is here! Digitally, at least...

These 11 songs were recorded between 2016 and 2019, and like everything offstage, we took our sweet time getting this finished. Some of these tracks have been in the live set since maybe 2014, so the album delves pretty deep into 'Spoons history at times.

We think it's worth the wait, but then we would say that, wouldn't we? CDs will be along in early 2022, assuming we don't find a way to eke that out as well.

credits

released December 10, 2021

The 'Spoons are:
Super Stu Cooper: sax.
Chris Newton: drums.
Matt Norrie: bass.
Kenny Shand: trombone & backing vox.
Daryl Short: keys & lead vox.

Big thanks go to Paul Emerson at Captain Toms in Aberdeen, for recording, mixing & mastering the whole shebang.

An honourable mention goes to Smooth Al Thomson, our original sax player, who retired back in 2016 after we'd already started recording this.
